The Jim Thorpe Memorial

 

 
There are many things to see and do in the Jim Thorpe which is why it has become a popular tourist attraction. During its hayday Jim Thorpe was perhaps the Coal Capital of the World. Today it attracts various types of people ranging from hikers and bikers to train enthusiasts. Along main street many quaint little shops specialize in a variety of items, mainly antiques and collectables. Fall Foliage and Mauch Chunk Lake

 

 

Another attraction to the area is it overall scenic appearance. Located directly north of Jim Thorpe Mauch Chunk Lake can be found. Here a variety of hiking and biking trails can found. Another popular attraction is the ongoing restoration of the old Switch Back Railroad. This was a gravity railway in which a system of tracks was laid and coal cars, along with a few passenger cars were pulled to the top of Mt. Piscah and descended downward to their various destinations.

For the train hobbiest a variety of old steam locomotives are on display both in restored form and in their original pre-restoration condition. For those wanting a taste of the days gone by, rides are available for a small fee. The train station has been completely restored and is a beautifull site to see. A recent addition to the station is an area dedicated the the various Canal Systems found throughout Eastern Pa.

Mauch Chunk Lake Park- Secluded outdoor recreational facility near Jim Thorpe. Pecturesque 350 acre lake provides boating, fishing and swimming area with guarded sand beach. Overnight camping with modern sanitary facilities and hot showers. Picnic area with charcoal grills. Boat and canoe rentals. Hiking trails, cross-country skiing, ice fishing. Jim Thorpe is a definite must see for anyone who is interested in both Nature and History.
